    Montville - John M. Rourke, Jr., 78, of Old Colchester Rd., died Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, in Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London. Mr. Rourke was born on June 6, 1931, in New Haven, the son of John and Lisette Rourke. He was employed for many years in Sales at Conn. Wheel and Rim in Waterford. He retired in 1984. Mr. Rourke is survived by his son, John M. Rourke III of Uncasville and his five daughters, Kimberly Earley of Uncasville, Gail Cohen of New York, Judith Perry of Michigan, Nadean Rudolph of Uncasville, Donna White of Tennessee; and his sister, Tass Rouurke of New Mexico; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Beverly. He is also predeceased by two sons, Michael and Ronnie. A Funeral Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Lake Ave., Niantic, CT 06357. In 1931, in the year that John Jr. M. Rourke was born, in March, “The Star Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem by congressional resolution. Other songs had previously been used - among them, "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", "God Bless America", and "America the Beautiful". There was fierce debate about making "The Star Spangled Banner" the national anthem - Southerners and veterans organizations supported it, pacifists and educators opposed it.

In 1942, at the age of only 11 years old, John was alive when on June 17th, Roosevelt approved the Manhattan Project, which lead to the development of the first atomic bomb. With the support of Canada and the United Kingdom, the Project came to employ more than 130,000 people and cost nearly $2 billion. Julius Robert Oppenheimer, a nuclear physicist born in New York, led the Los Alamos Laboratory that developed the actual bomb. The first artificial nuclear explosion took place near Alamogordo New Mexico on July 16, 1945.
