  • Introduction

    The Kilmore Free Press, January 1924. Mr. John Ross, who died at Melbourne on Sunday, 23 ultimo, at the age of 71 years, was a resident of Howe's Creek, near Mansfield for many years, and was popular and highly esteemed by a large circle of friends in the mountain country. Mr. Ross spent his childhood in the Kilmore district, being the son of an early settler in Willowmavin. He was for years mainly engaged in conducting mountain team trips to Jamieson, Gaffney's Creek, Wood's Point and Matlock mining districts, and intervening settlement's and was popular and respected by all classes. He leaves a widow and large family to mourn the loss of a good husband and parent. (Ultimo-of last month)

    The North Eastern Ensign ( Benalla) January 1924. MR. JOHN ROSS. Mr. J. Ross, storekeeper, carrier and farmer of Howe's Creek, Mansfield, died on the 24th of December at a private hospital in Toorak, after a surgical operation. For the last fifty years deceased had catered for the needs of the Jamieson, Gaffney's Creek, Wood's Point and Matlock mining districts. Deceased was born at Kilmore in 1852, and leaves a widow and grown up family of nine.
