John Hubbard Walser 1839 - 1910

John Hubbard Walser was born on May 24, 1839 to William Walser and Salome (Snider) Walser, and had siblings William Henry Walser, Mary Ann (Walser) James, and Jacob S. Walser. He married Eliza Jane (Myers) Walser, and they were married until Eliza's death on October 8, 1889. He had children Malinda Josephine (Walser) Hege, Susan Edith (Walser) Shoaf, Mary Ellen Walser, Laura Columbus (Walser) Hobbs, and Mittie (Walser) Foster. John Walser died at age 70 years old on April 28, 1910 in Reeds Crossroads, Davidson County, North Carolina United States.

  • Introduction

    John enlisted in Company B. 57th North Carolina Infantry Rowan County at the age of 23 on July 4, 1862. He mustered in as a Private and was promoted to Corporal in November-December 1862. He was promoted to Sergeant in March-May 1863. He was reported present until June 4, 1863 when he was hospitalized in Richmond, Virginia with diarrhea. He returned to duty on July 3, 1863 and was captured at Rappahannock Station, Virginia on November 7, 1863. He was confined at Point Lookout yankee prison, Maryland on November 11, 1863 and was paroled at Point Lookout on March 16, 1864. He was received at City Point, Virginia on March 20, 1864 for exchange. He was hospitalized in Richmond, Virginia on June 27, 1864 with rubeola. He was reported absent without leave on an unspecified date and returned to duty prior to September 21, 1864 and was reported present through December 31, 1864. He was reduced to ranks (Private) in January-February 1865 and was captured at Hatcher's Run, Virginia on February 6, 1865 and confined again at Point Lookout yankee prison Maryland on February 9, 1865. He was released from Point Lookout on June 21, 1865. (submitted by John Nash)

In 1839, in the year that John Hubbard Walser was born, in The Boston Morning Post, on March 23rd, the first recorded use of the word "OK" appeared. A columnist in the paper said this: "The "Chairman of the Committee on Charity Lecture Bells, is one of the deputation, and perhaps if he should return to Boston, via Providence, he of the Journal, and his train-band, would have his 'contribution box,' et ceteras, o.k.—all correct—and cause the corks to fly, like sparks, upward." While this is the first known time that OK appeared in print, where the word came from is still disputed.
