John Everett 1838 - 1898

John Everett of Newcastle, NSW Australia was born in 1838 in Launceston, TAS to Jane Liddle Hastie (Marr) Everett and Mary Jane Lindsay. He had siblings Mary Ann Everett, Elizabeth Everett, and Jane Everett. He married Jane Liddle Hastie Marr, and died at age 60 years old in 1898 in Newcastle, NSW. John Everett was buried in 1898 at Sandgate Cemetery in Newcastle.

In 1838, in the year that John Everett was born, on January 11th in New Jersey, Samuel Morse and two others first publicly demonstrated Morse's new invention - the telegraph. Patented by Morse in 1837, the electrical telegraph used a code developed by him and his assistant, Samuel Vail, and sent a message two miles. In 1844, Morse broadcast from Washington DC to Baltimore Maryland the message "What hath God wrought" and the telegraph took off.
Did you know?
In 1865, at the age of 27 years old, John was alive when on March 4th, President Abraham Lincoln was sworn in for a second term. A little over a month later, he would be assassinated by a Confederate sympathizer - 4 days after the surrender of Lee at Appomattox, which had effectively ended the Civil War.
