John Charles Thynne of Clifton Hill Australia was born in 1865 in VIC to Francis Joseph Thynne and Elizabeth Ann McGuirk Thynne. He had siblings Josephine Mary Thynne, Gerald Augustine Patrick Fitzgerald Thynne, Henry Hugh Fitzgerald Thynne, Daniel Francis Mathias Thynne, and Bedelia Ann Thynne. He married Alice Joan (Wickham) Thynne in 1914, and had children John Thynne, Hugh Augustine Thynne, and Leo Daniel Joseph Thynne. John Thynne died at age 85 years old in 1950.

In 1865, in the year that John Charles Thynne was born, on September 26th, Champ Ferguson, a Confederate guerrilla, became the first person to be convicted of war crimes arising from the Civil War. (There was only one other person convicted of war crimes in the Civil War.) He was found guilty by a U.S. Army tribunal on 23 charges arising from the murder of 53 people. On October 20, he was hung.

In 1894, by the time he was 29 years old, large reserves of oil were discovered on the Osage Indian reservation in Oklahoma. Previously thought to be "useless" land - not even good for farming - the tribe had bought the land themselves. The discovery of oil made the Osage the "richest group of people in the world" at the time.
