    IMMIGRATION The ship, Wanata departed Southhampton, England on 25 Oct 1853 and arrived in Melbourne, Australia on 22 Jan 1854 aboard were John B Maling (aged 24) with his first wife Elizabeth (20). John was listed as a carpenter. DEATH NOTICE MALING.— On the 9th October, at his residence. "Ancyra," Weybridge-street, Surrey Hills, John Butler, the beloved husband of Kate Maling, and father of Silas Young. Alick and Zillah. Interred prlvately in the Box Hill Cemetery on the 10th inst. (The Age (Melbourne), 12 Oct 1912.)

In 1829, in the year that John Butler Maling was born, on July 23rd, in the United States, William Burt obtained the first patent for a kind of typewriter - an earlier one had been made in Italy in 1808. The typographer, as it was called, was a rectangular wooden box 12 inches wide, 12 inches high, and 18 inches long. It worked by depressing a rotating lever so that an inked letter made contact with the paper.
