John Barrie of Edon Australia was born circa 1869 in Oxley, Wangaratta Rural City County, VIC to Jane Reid Barrie and Andrew Barrie. He had siblings Andrew Robert Barrie, Jane Eva Barrie Barrie, Ernest Stoddart Barrie, and Samuel Walter Barrie. John Barrie died at age 83 years old circa 1952.

In 1869, in the year that John Barrie was born, on August 31st, Irish scientist Mary Ward, age 42, was hit and killed by a car powered by a steam engine. The car was built by her cousins. She was the world's first known casualty of a car accident.

In 1918, John was 49 years old when on November 1, an elevated train on the Brooklyn line of the subway - driven by an inexperienced operator because of a strike - tried to navigate a turn at 30mph. The limit on the curve was 6 mph. The 2nd and 3rd cars of the 5 car wooden train were badly damaged and at least 93 people were killed, making it the deadliest crash in New York subway history.
