John Andrew Pate was born on October 6, 1865 in Murphysboro, Illinois United States to Perleamon Pate and Arvilla Adeline (Bowley) Pate, and had siblings Oliver Franklin Pate, George Thomas Pate, Louisa Ann Pate, Alfred Leroy Pate, Adeline Belle Pate, James Edward Pate, Phillip Anthony Pate, and Mary Elizabeth Pate. John Pate married Annice (Bridges) Pate on June 2, 1892, and died at age 83 years old on May 2, 1949.

Duties soon expanded to murder, bank robbery, and illegal gambling - and, after the assassination of President McKinley in 1901, presidential protection.

In 1903, when he was 38 years old, two brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, flew the first powered heavier-than-air plane. They flew 4 times in one day - the longest flight lasting 59 seconds and a little over 852 feet. While the brothers had notified several newspapers of their attempt, only one - a local paper - covered it. After their 4th flight, a gust of wind caught the plane, turned it over, and totaled it.
