John Andrew Howard 1869 - 1917

John Andrew Howard was born in 1869 to John Howard and Honorah Howard ( Davoren, and had siblings Honora Cusack ( Howard, Michael Howard, Maria Healy ( Howard, Joseph Howard, and Supt. Anthony Howard. He married Harriet Howard, and had children John Andrew Howard Jnr., Herbert Howard, Isobel Howard ( Sister Livinus ), James Howard, and Leo Howard. John Howard died at age 47 years old on September 24, 1917 at Melbourne Hospital in VIC Australia, and was buried at Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery Bell St, in Preston, Darebin City County.

  • Introduction

    The Talbot Leader, 29 September 1917. Detective J. A. Howard died at the Melbourne Hospital on Monday, at the age of 49 years. Deceased had been a member of the police force for 23 years, having joined in 1894. He was promoted to the position of detective in 1901, and was highly successful in that department, being concerned in some smart captures. Since the outbreak of the war he had been attached to the intelligence section of the Defence Department. He leaves a wife and four sons and one daughter, one of his sons having served at Gallipoli, and is now in France. Deceased suffered from an internal complaint, but only went off duty about a month ago. He was a native of Talbot, being a son of the late John Howard. His brother and sister ( Mr. M. Howard and Mrs. Healy ) reside at Caralulup; another brother is in the police force, and one in the Railway Department.

Late of Criminal Investigation Branch, Victoria Police. Aged 48 years. May his soul rest in peace. The Argus, Melbourne 6 October 1917. Previously, workdays would consist of 10 to 16 hours a day - 6 days a week. It would take years before the 8 hour workday became common practice - and longer before it became a law.
