John Alexander Collie of Balwyn, City of Boroondara County, VIC Australia was born circa 1886 in Collingwood, City of Yarra County to James Collie and Julia Marion (Beddoe) Collie. He had siblings Asprey James Collie, Marion Adella Collie, Ruby Justina Collie, Florence Maude Collie, Margaret Mary Collie, and Linda Kathleen Collie. He married Beulah Frances Williams in 1914, and had a child John Douglas Collie. John Collie died at age 75 years old circa 1961 in Balwyn, City of Boroondara County.

In 1886, in the year that John Alexander Collie was born, on June 13th, the "Great Vancouver Fire" destroyed most of Vancouver, British Columbia. A small brush fire got out of control and spread to the rest of the city. Dozens of people died and it was only after the fire that money was raised for a fire hall. The local Squamish tribe rescued people who had jumped into bodies of water to escape the conflagration.

In 1919, at the age of 33 years old, John was alive when in January, Nebraska was the 36th state to ratify the 18th Amendment, making it the law of the land. The 18th Amendment established Prohibition - a law against the production, transport, and sale of alcohol. Private consumption and possession were not prohibited. Several months later, the Volstead Act was passed, creating laws to enforce the Amendment. Bootlegging and bathtub gin followed.
