He had siblings Eileen Ruth Sharp, George William Sharp, Margaret Mary Sharp, Clara Sharp, Joseph Denis Sharp, Frank Frederick Sharp, Leo Bernard Sharp, Henry Claude Sharp, Eileen Ruth Sharp, and Sarah Jane Sharp. John Sharp married Vera May Howlett in 1927, and died at age 88 years old in October 1992 in Ballarat, City of Ballarat County.

In 1903, in the year that John Albert Sharp was born, the book The Souls of Black Folk, written by W. E. B. Du Bois, was published. Containing several essays on the African-American experience in America, much of the book was based on Du Bois' own life. The book was one of the very early works in the science of sociology.

In 1921, John was 18 years old when in May, the Emergency Quota Act - or Emergency Immigration Act - was passed. The law restricted the number of immigrants to 357,000 per year. It also established an immigration quota in which only 3 per cent of the total population of any ethnic group already in the USA in 1910, could be admitted to America after 1921. Although the Act was supposed to be temporary, it stayed in effect until 1965.
