John Addison Baker 1859 - 1933

John Addison Baker was born on May 11, 1859 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania United States to Benjamin Baker and Ellen Baker. He married Virginia Kate (Hudson) Baker on April 3, 1884 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, and they were married until death separated them. He had children Ada Fanonda (Baker) Wert and Ethel Baker. John Baker died at age 73 years old on April 4, 1933.

In 1859, in the year that John Addison Baker was born, on October 16th, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. He wanted to "liberate" the guns in the armory and arm slaves. Brown was captured and hanged on December 2nd.

In 1865, he was merely 6 years old when on September 26th, Champ Ferguson, a Confederate guerrilla, became the first person to be convicted of war crimes arising from the Civil War. (There was only one other person convicted of war crimes in the Civil War.) He was found guilty by a U.S. Army tribunal on 23 charges arising from the murder of 53 people. On October 20, he was hung.
