  • Introduction

Johann Dietrich Utz (now Ouzts) is the son of Maria Barbara (Anna) and Martin Utz of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He married first to Anna Catherina (Eva) GILBERT in Hoffenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. They had six children: George Peter, Anna Elizabetha, Anna Catherina Jacobina, Maria Catherina, Johann Adam, and George Michael. In October, 1766, Dietrich and Anna left their native Hoffenheim Germany with their two living childrem, George Peter, age 8 and Anna Maria Catherina (Eva),age 4 for America. For reason unknown Anna was aboard the ship, Belfast Packet and Dietrich was aboard the ship, Britannia, arriving in Charles Town SC (now Charleston), ten days before the Belfast Packet, perhaps to allow for lodging in advance of his family. Anna became ill enroute to America and died at sea, never seeing America. She is buried at sea in the Atlantic Ocean. Upon learning of the death of Anna, Dietrich married Maria Dorothea SAMBLIN, an immigrant also arriving aboard the ship Britanna, on November 25, 1766 in St. John's Lutheran Church, Charles Town, SC. They had four children in America, likely in Newberry District, SC: Elizabeth, William Michael, Jacob Carter, and Jacob Martin (Jake), Sr. Dietrich was granted Bounty land of 200 acres in Newberry District, SC and Dorothea was granted 100 acres ajoining Dietrich. Also aboard the Britania was Anna Margaretha UTZIN, a relative of Dietrich, who was granted 100 acres ajoining and upon her death, that land became Dietrich's as her heir. Diedrich moved his family to Edgefield District before his son, George Peter married Elizabeth HARLING and they began their family of fifteen children there.
