Jeremiah Stilley's History: 1834 - 1924

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

The westward move of Mr. Stilley commenced in 1857. Early in September of that year, a party of immigrants known as "The Arkansas Company" arrived in Utah from the east on their way to California. The caravan divided into two sections, one party taking what was known as the northern route, the other turning toward the Mountain Meadow Pass south of Salt Lake City. Had Mr. Stilley's choice favored the latter route, his story would not have been written, for those who chose the southern route died in what is historically known as the Mountain Meadow Massacre. Mr. Stilley first settled on the Feather River in California, and then came north and built a squatters cabin in what is today Puyallup, WA. In 1862 he either gave or sold his cabin to Ezra Meeker. That September he married Meeker's step-sister Mariah Angelina Burr. The couple eventually settled in Buckley, WA, where they had a hop farm. After living in western Washington for 38 years the family took out a homestead in the Okanogan Valley in 1900. The Stilleys celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1923.
