James Cowen died at age 79 years old on March 6, 1911 in Mentone, City of Kingston County, VIC Australia, and was buried at Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery Charman Rd, in Cheltenham, City of Bayside County.

Published until 1865, the paper was strongly abolitionist and advocated the "immediate and complete emancipation of all slaves".

In 1849, he was 18 years old when on April 22nd, Patrick Kennedy - great-grandfather of President John Kennedy - arrived in the United States. He was the 3rd born son of an Irish farmer and he knew that he wouldn't be given the chance to run the family farm. So he emigrated to Massachusetts and became a cooper. After only 10 years in the US, he died of cholera at age 35.
