James Robert Mcgee of Pulaski, Giles County, TN was born on November 30, 1935 to Lena (Medley) McGee and Henry McGee. He had siblings Mary Ellen (McGee) Whitworth, Larry E. McGee, Dorothy "Dot" (McGee) Thornton, Tully McGee, Daisy Mae (McGee) Tatum-Rich, Barbara June (McGee) Wallace, Mable Ruth (McGee) White, Tony McGee, and Harold Dean "Bill" McGee. James Mcgee married Martha McGee (Née Wright), and died at age 46 years old in September 1982.

In 1935, in the year that James Robert McGee was born, the BOI's name (the Bureau of Investigation) was changed to the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and it officially became a separate agency with the Department of Justice. J. Edgar Hoover, the Chief of the BOI, continued in his office and became the first Director of the FBI. The FBI's responsibility is to "detect and prosecute crimes against the United States".
