In 1831, in the year that James Milroy was born, on November 7th, slave trading was forbidden in Brazil. Purchasing slaves had begun under Portuguese rule in the mid-16th century - slaves were used on sugarcane plantations. It wasn't until 1888, however, that slavery was totally abolished.

In 1841, at the age of only 10 years old, James was alive when on February 4th, James Morris wrote about Groundhog Day in his diary - the first known reference to the day in North America. He wrote: "Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate."
