  • Introduction

    James Joseph Detoy was the son of Louis J DeToy (1893-1986) and Margerita L DeWitte (1904-1992). He was born on March 26, 1922 on the family farm just east of Jasper, MN, where he was raised and attended country school and often rode his pony, Buster, to the country school. He had siblings including Leona Lucille (1924-1993), Helen Clemice (born 1928), Marie Margaret (born 1931), Clara June (1935-2005), and Carol Mae Detoy (1937-1998). Jim completed high school and then helped on the family farm until he enlisted into the United States military on January 23, 1942. He volunteered for infantry duty overseas and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 222 Regiment, 42nd Rainbow Infantry Division. He fought in the European Theater of France and Germany, and took part in the liberation of the German Concentration Camp in Dachau. Jim was discharged from the Army on January 4, 1946 and was awarded two Battle Stars, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and Combat Infantry Badge. Alter his time in the Army, Jim returned to Jasper to work with his father on the family farm. He married Lillian Lillian Elsie Novak (born 1926) on September 16, I947 and they had a son together, Anthony "Tony" Wayne Detoy (1951-2010). He and his family later moved to Brandon, South Dakota where heworked on a small farm for 25 years and worked for the Brandon Valley School District and the City of Brandon for several years. He volunteered for infantry duty overseas and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 222 Regiment, 42nd Rainbow Infantry Division. Jim saw combat in the European Theater of both France and Germany. He took part in the liberation of the German Concentration Camp in Dachau. He received two Battle Stars, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and Combat Infantry Badge among other awards. Jim was discharged from the Army on January 4, 1946.

    Brandon - lames I. DeToy, 84, died peacefully at his home on Friday. June 2, 2006. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at Risen Savior Catholic Church in Brandon, with interment at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery near Jasper, MN. Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM Monday, lune 5, at Risen Savior Catholic Church in Brandon, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 to 7:00 PM and a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 7:00 PM. James Joseph DeToy was born to Louis and Margaret (DeWitte) DeToy on March 26, 1922 on the family farm just east of Jasper, MN, where he was raised and attended country school. Many times Jim rode his pony. Buster, to the country school. Jim completed his education and helped on the family farm until his enlistment into the army on January 23, 1942. He volunteered for infantry duty overseas and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 222 Regiment, 42nd Rainbow Infantry Division. Jim saw combat in the European Theater of both France and Germany. He received, among other awards, two Battle Stars, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and Combat Infantry Badge. Jim was discharged from the Army on January 4, 1946. He was a life long member of the Brandon VEW, receiving his 60-year pin. Alter the war, Jim went to work with his father on the family farm near Jasper, MN. He married Lillian Novak on September 16, I947. Jim left farming in 1962 at Jasper and worked on a small farm for 25 years just south of Brandon. He also worked for the Brandon Valley School District and the City of Brandon for several years. Jim was a member of Risen Savior Catholic Church. While he could not attend Sunday Mass at the church, he never missed the Sunday morning TV broadcast. Jim is remembered by his loving wife and care giver of 58 years, Lillian, Brandon, SD; two sons, James (Sara) DeToy, Rapid City, SD and Tony, Pierre, SD; four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; three sisters, Helen (Don) DeSchepper, Jasper, MN, Irene (Chuck) Padgett, Sioux Falls, SD, and Marie Martinson, Jasper, MN; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Clara Elverson, Carol Zimprich, and Leona Stelling: 2 sons; and 3 daughters.
