2nd Lt. James H. Johns, Co.D, 18th Ky.Vol. Infantry
James Henry Johns, 2nd LT, Company D, 18th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, Civil War. Born 1840 near Unity, Pendleton County, Ky. Son of Henry Lindsey Johns and Elizabeth Shively. Enlisted in late 1861 and elected 2nd LT. by the men in company D. Resigned his commission in 1863 for unknown reasons. Re-entered the Union Army in September 1863 as Captain of Company F, 40th Kentucky Mounted Infantry. Served in the 40th for one year term of service. Honorably discharged in September 1864.
Saw action at Cynthiana, Ky, Richmond,Ky, Saltville, VA, Mt. Sterling, Ky, Bardstown, Ky, and various skirmishes against Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and his Raiders.
After the war, James H. Johns was a dealer in tobacco at Knoxville, Pendleton Co.Ky. He was married twice and had many children. He died of cancer at Knoxville, Kentucky on Jan.11, 1885. Buried at the Johns Family Cemetery, Pendleton County, Ky. with military head stone.
