  • Introduction

    The families of Seaborn Coker and Martin Crane migrated from Alabama to Conway Co. Arkansas in 1852 shortley after the marriage of their two children James and Sarah. There are court papers in the Conway Co. AR court house that after the death of his son James, Seaborn went to court to maintain custudy of his two grandchildren James Jr and Mary. At one time there was a hearing for the return of Mary from Martin Crane who was her maternal grandfather

In 1828, in the year that James Duncan Coker Sr was born, on April 20th, French explorer René Caillié became the first non-Muslim to enter Timbuktu and to later return alive. He gave Europeans a first hand description of the city. He was awarded a prize of 10,000 francs for his trip - offered by the Société de Géographie.

In 1831, by the time he was just 3 years old, on August 21st, in the United States, Nat Turner's slave rebellion broke out in Southampton County, Virginia. Rebel slaves, led by Nat Turner, killed from 55 to 65 people - the largest and deadliest slave uprising in U.S. history. The rebellion was suppressed after a few days and Virginia executed 56 slaves accused of being part of the rebellion although many were innocent. Nat Turner was captured on October 30th, tried, and hung on November 11th.
