James Boyle Falconer was born in 1818 to Mary Falconer and Robert Falconer, and had a brother Macvey Napier Falconer. He married Catherine Falconer ( Milligan, and had a child Job Levers Falconer. James Falconer died at age 50 years old in 1868.

In 1818, in the year that James Boyle Falconer was born, on April 4th, the United States Congress adopted the official flag of the United States. It had 13 red and white stripes - representing the original 13 colonies - and one star for each state (twenty at the time) with additional stars to be added whenever a new state was added to the Union.

In 1823, he was merely 5 years old when on February 20th, British explorer James Weddell's expedition to Antarctica traveled 532 miles south of the Antarctic Circle - the southernmost position any ship had reached before. It would be more than 80 years before anyone sailed farther. The region of the Southern Ocean that he explored was later named the Weddell Sea.
