James Black Lawrence 1839 - 1912

James Black Lawrence of St Kilda, Port Phillip City County, VIC Australia was born in 1839 to James Lawrence and Elizabeth Adam Lawrence. He had siblings Hannah Elizabeth Lawrence, John Lawrence, Hannah Elizabeth Lawrence, George Lawrence, Alexander Lawrence, and William Lawrence. He married Sarah Anketell Lawrence on April 7, 1881, and had a child Myrtle Maria Eli Lawrence. James Lawrence died at age 73 years old in 1912 in St Kilda.

In 1839, in the year that James Black Lawrence was born, the "Night of the Big Wind" hit Ireland on January 6th. It was the most damaging cyclone to hit Ireland in 300 years. In North Dublin, around 20% to 25% of homes were damaged or destroyed, and 42 ships were wrecked. Winds hit over 115 miles per hour.

In 1858, he was 19 years old when on January 25th, the "Wedding March" - composed by Felix Mendelssohn - became a popular wedding recessional after being played at the marriage of Queen Victoria's daughter Victoria - eldest child of Victoria and Albert and Princess Royal. Princess Victoria was married to Prince Friedrich of Prussia in St James's Palace, London and as with all things royal in Victorian England, everyone wanted it played at their wedding.
