He married Laila Virginia (Yeaman) Bartee on November 21, 1952 in Pittsylvania County, and they were married until James' death on June 11, 1973 in Danville.

James A. Bartee Dies At Age 79 James Austin Bartee, 79, of 235 Cedar Lane, died yesterday afternoon in Memorial Hospital. He had been a patient since March. Born in Rockingham County, N.C., Aug. 10, 1893, he was the son of the late Richard Maryland and Sarah Jane Rich Bartee. His first wife, the former Ula Adams, died in 1950. He married the former Laila Virginia Yeaman, who survives, in 1952. In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by two sons, Aubrey Bartee of Hampton and Lester Bartee of Danville; a daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Allen of Danville; two sisters, Mrs. Tera Daniel and Mrs. Annie Carter, both of Danville; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Barker Chapel tomorrow at 2 p.m. by the Rev. John Finklea, with interment in Highland Burial Park. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. today. At other times they will be at the home, 235 Cedar Lane, and at the home of Lester Bartee, 430 Lansbury Dr.
