James Allen Poteet Sr was born on July 2, 1947 to George Poteet and Wilma Jean (Miller) Poteet, and had siblings John Wayne Poteet, George "Buck" Wetzel Poteet Jr., Dorothy Jean (Poteet) Sykora, and Marshall Lee Poteet. He married Louella (Montgomery) Poteet on June 7, 1968 in Crown City, Gallia County, Ohio United States, and they were married until James' death on June 6, 2018. James Poteet had children Deborah Jean (Poteet) Adkins, Lisa Ann Poteet, and James Allen Poteet.

In 1947, in the year that James Allen Poteet was born, on November 25th, the Hollywood "Black List" was created by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Ten Hollywood writers and directors had refused to testify to the Committee regarding "Communists" or "Reds" in the movie industry. The next day, the blacklist was created and they were fired.
