Jacob Silberberg of West Palm Beach, Palm Beach County, FL was born on July 7, 1907 to Samuel Silberberg and Sarah Silberberg. He had siblings Sidney Silberberg, Bernard Silberberg, Rebecca Silberberg Berger, and Evelyn Silberberg Wolfson. He married Esta Katz Silberberg, and had children Steven Harris Silberberg and Ilene Silberberg Harsip. Jacob Silberberg died at age 73 years old in January 1981.

In 1907, in the year that Jacob Silberberg was born, the Monongah coal mining disaster occurred on December 6th, happening at the Fairmont Coal Company’s No. 6 and No. 8 mines.. Over 361 miners were killed. Because there was no breathing apparatus at the time to help rescuers, recovery efforts were greatly hampered. It is considered the worst mining disaster in American history and led to government oversight in mining practices.

In 1935, he was 28 years old when the BOI's name (the Bureau of Investigation) was changed to the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and it officially became a separate agency with the Department of Justice. J. Edgar Hoover, the Chief of the BOI, continued in his office and became the first Director of the FBI. The FBI's responsibility is to "detect and prosecute crimes against the United States".
