McAfoose was born on September 9, 1829 in Pennsylvania United States to Daniel McAfoose and Catharine Rivers McAfoose, and had siblings Lavina (McAfoose) Hawk, Mary Ida (McAfoose) Whitaker, Eva McAfoose Whitaker, and Mary Belle (McAfoose) Schrecengost. Jacob McAfoose died at age 61 years old on May 21, 1891 in Millville, and was buried at Hawthorn Cemetery in Hawthorn, Clarion County.

In 1829, in the year that Jacob R. McAfoose was born, on July 23rd, in the United States, William Burt obtained the first patent for a kind of typewriter - an earlier one had been made in Italy in 1808. The typographer, as it was called, was a rectangular wooden box 12 inches wide, 12 inches high, and 18 inches long. It worked by depressing a rotating lever so that an inked letter made contact with the paper.
