J.S.Sachs, Scoutmaster, Chicago Illinois, in 1916, presiding over Preparedness Day.

Handwritten on photo:"Preparedness Day June 3, 1916...J.S.Sachs, Scoutmaster, 425 S. Wabash Ave., Chicago."

Preparedness Day consisted of a series of parades staged nationwide with the intent of pressuring Congress to increase our armed forces. Chicago was the site of the largest of these parades. The man in the center of the podium was William Hale Thompson, who served as Chicago mayor from 1915 to 1923, then again from 1927 to 1931. He was called "Big Bill" and was the last Republican mayor to serve in Chicago. His 'return' to mayor 1927 was supported by Al Capone, and he served during the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.
Standing on the podium to the right, is a GAR veteran, Mr. Snow.
