J. Daniel Mcdowell was born on April 17, 1827 at Edgefield, SC to Elizabeth 'Betsy' Ouzts and William McDowell, and had siblings Benjamin Franklin McDowell, George [P.] B. McDowell, William Wister McDowell, Georgiana Elizabeth McDowell, Parthenia Savannah McDowell, Lucinthia Jane McDowell, John L. McDowell, Keziah A. McDowell, Shemuel McDowell, James Tolbert McDowell, Francis Ellen McDowell, and Elizabeth Caroline 'Eliza' McDowell. J. Mcdowell died at age 37 years old on June 15, 1864, and was buried at Confederate Cemetery in Covington, Newton County, Georgia United States.

In 1827, in the year that J. Daniel McDowell was born, on February 28th, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad - the B&O - was incorporated. The B&O became the first railroad to carry both people and freight and was Maryland's answer to the Erie Canal. Construction began on July 4th, 1828.

In 1836, this person was just 9 years old when on February 23rd, the Battle of the Alamo began. A group of American settlers were surrounded by the Mexican Army, led by Santa Anna, at the Alamo.
