Ivy Pearl Shingles 1902 - 1989

Ivy Pearl (Shingles) Gieschen of Maffra, Wellington Shire County, VIC Australia was born in 1902 in Maffra to Grace Annie (Davis) Shingles and Alfred Ernt Shingles. She had siblings Delcia May Shingles, Ernt Henry William Shingles, and James Vernon Shingles. She married John Henry Gieschen Jr in 1920, and had a child Henry Alfred Gieschen. Ivy Gieschen died at age 86 years old on August 5, 1989 in Maffra.

In 1902, in the year that Ivy Pearl Shingles was born, about 150 thousand United Mine Workers went on strike in eastern Pennsylvania for a wage increase and more suitable hours. They eventually got a 10% raise and their workday was reduced from 10 hours to 9. Because winter was coming and most people at the time heated their homes with coal, President Teddy Roosevelt arbitrated between the owners and the workers - the first time that the Federal government arbitrated in a strike.

In 1910, at the age of just 8 years old, Ivy was alive when the Mann Act, also called the White-Slave Traffic Act, was signed into law. Its purpose was to make it a felony to engage in interstate or foreign commerce transport of "any woman or girl for the purpose of prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose". But the language was so broad that it was also applied to consensual sex between adults when wished.
