Ivy Mattern had siblings Florence Margaret Gumley, Margaret Frances Gumley, Donald Gumley, Victor Vivian Gumley, Eileen Marjorie Gumley, Ethel Mary Gumley, Percy John "Jack" Gumley, Thelma Gumley Perry, and Melville May Gumley. She married Victor Hugo Mattern. She also married Robert Williams, and they had a child Robert Williams.. Ivy Mattern died at age 73 years old on June 28, 1972 in Yarram, Wellington Shire County.

In 1898, in the year that Ivy Gumley was born, on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.

In 1902, by the time she was only 4 years old, the first Rose Bowl game was played in Pasadena, California. Called the "Tournament East–West football game" at the time, the Michigan Wolverines (East) played the Stanford Indians (West) - the Wolverines won 49 - 0. (The Stanford captain requested an end to the game with 8 minutes remaining.) The Tournament of Roses Parade began in 1890 and the football game began as a way to boost tourism in the area.
