Isabella Maud (Giffin) Macklin 1884 - 1966

Isabella Maud (Giffin) Macklin was born in 1884 to William Giffin and Harriett Jemima (Venables) Giffin, and had a brother William George Giffin. She married Charles Christopher Macklin. She would also marry Percy Barrett Proctor. Isabella Macklin died at age 82 years old in 1966, and was buried at Toowong Cemetery Frederick St, in Toowong, Brisbane City County, QLD Australia.

    The Telegraph, Brisbane. 10th February 1912. - MARRIAGES. PROCTOR - GIFFIN. On 17th January, at Christ Church, Milton, by Rev. Hugh Simmons, Percy B., eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Proctor, Wellington road, East Brisbane, to Isabel May, fourth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Giffin, Campbell street, Paddington. The Telegraph, Brisbane. 20th May 1922. - MARRIAGES. MACKLIN - PROCTOR. On the 21st April, at Christ Church, Milton, by the Rev. O. M. Whitehouse, Isabella Maud Proctor, widow of the late P. B. Proctor, British Solomon Islands, and daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. Giffin, of Edmonton, Campbell street, Paddington, to Charles Christopher Darrell Macklin, of the H.M.A.S. Stalwart, and eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Macklin, of Evanston Row, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.

In 1884, in the year that Isabella Maud (Giffin) Macklin was born, on August 5th, the cornerstone for the base of the Statue of Liberty - a gift from the people of France - was laid. 120,000 people - most donations were $1 - donated to the completion of the base. An 1883 poem by Emma Lazarus was also written to raise funds. That poem was included in the base of the statue and is well known today. In 1901, when she was 17 years old, Edward VII succeeded Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria of England had become Queen in 1837 and reigned until her death in 1901. Her 63 year reign was the longest in history prior to Elizabeth II who recently broke her record. The time during which she led the country was known as the Victorian era and she presided over great changes in the United Kingdom, including the expansion of the British Empire and the Industrial Revolution.
