She grew up in Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia and had siblings Harold Barnard (1893-1968), Leo Lockhart (1895-1945), and Cecil Theophilus Allen (1897-1898). She also had a half brother, George Louis Thomas Allen (1899-1983). In 1915, she married John William McElvouge in Victoria, Australia. They lived in both Carlton, Victoria, Australia and Melbourne East, Victoria, Australia. The couple had children John Harold Francis (1916-1966), Doris Ellen Irene who did not survive (1917-1917), Mavis Margaret (1919-1959), George Edward who did not survive (1920-1920), and Leslie Walter McElvogue (1921-1991). Irene and John divorced in 1936 in Victoria, Australia.
