Ione Elizabeth (Milliken) Coward was born in 1897 in Bridgewater, VIC Australia to Elizabeth Lucy (Smye) Milliken and Hugh Percy Milliken, and had siblings Percy Hugh Milliken, Margaret Jane Milliken, Frederick Charles Milliken, Ruth Alice (Milliken) Prentice, and Hugh Alwyn Milliken. She married William Thomas Coward, and had children William Thomas Coward and James Cameron Coward. Ione Coward died at age 68 years old on December 1, 1966, and was buried at Hemmant Cemetery and Crematorium Hemmant And Tingalpa Rd, in Hemmant, Brisbane City County, QLD.

In 1897, in the year that Ione Elizabeth (Milliken) Coward was born, on September 21st, editor and publisher Francis P. Church responded to a letter to the editor from Virginia O'Hanlon, 8 years old. Virginia's father had told her that "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." So she wrote to the Sun, asking if there was a Santa Claus. Church responded with the now famous editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus".

In 1907, at the age of just 10 years old, Ione was alive when the Monongah coal mining disaster occurred on December 6th, happening at the Fairmont Coal Company’s No. 6 and No. 8 mines.. Over 361 miners were killed. Because there was no breathing apparatus at the time to help rescuers, recovery efforts were greatly hampered. It is considered the worst mining disaster in American history and led to government oversight in mining practices.
