Have discovered the reason Hugo Ludolff changed his name to Albert Neil prior to enlisting in WW1 was due to a criminal record in 1909 & 1910. He was convicted on 2 counts of larceny at Richmond Petty Sessions. He was also in breach of recognizance and imprisoned in Melbourne gaol 24/2/1910. There are details available online from the Public Record Office Victoria series VPRS:515 Central register of Male Prisoners 1909 page 373. Prisoner number: 32300. It has the photos on this site

His daughter, Jennifer Wilson, was born in January,1955 and was given up for adoption. Her name was changed by the adoptive family to Susan (different surname as well ). Hugo Ludolff aka Albert Neil aka Bert Leahy was working as a steeplejack and living at 72 New Canterbury Rd, Petersham at the time of his daughter's birth. Bert Leahy was a friend of Albert Wilson. I would like to hear from anyone related to the Ludolff family or Alice Pearce (nee Sullivan).

A photo of Hugo Ludolff, the son of Jean Max Ludolff., who used the names Albert Neil and Bert Leahy when he enlisted in WW1. He was wounded in WW1 and taken prisoner by the Germans. After the war he did various jobs but his main work was as a steeplejack on tall chimneys, steeples , flagpoles etc.His photo appeared in several nnewspapers and magazines as the work of steeplejacks was extremely dangerous and there were many fatalities.

Hugo Ludolff used the name Bert Leahy from around 1916 until his death in 1962. His stepmothers' name was Martha Leahy. His birth mother was Alice Pearce (nee Sullivan) born in Tasmania and his father was a German immigrant named Jean Max Ludolff (mostly known as Max Ludolff )..Hugo mustn't have officially changed his name to Bert Leahy as when he did eventually marry Lena Penney he used his true name of Hugo Ludolff. Even the Army records indicate they never found the birth certificate for Bert Leahy and he always said he had no next of kin. His life was full of secrets. Perhaps because the Army would not have enlisted the son of a German immigrant....or... Perhaps as he had enlisted as Bert Leahy he needed to keep using this name to receive support at times from Veterans Affairs. He suffered chronic bronchitis, otitis media , kidney stones and later developed heart problems. His time spent as a German prisoner of war in WW1 would have been horrific and even though he kept going on unauthorised leave from the Army , he still contributed to the war effort. He was a friend of Albert Wilson and that is how he met the woman who had his child . I can't reveal her name due to privacy reasons as she is still living.
