Hugh Spotswood Phillips of Horsham, Horsham Rural City County, VIC Australia was born circa 1886 in Duchembegarra to Mary Jane Whitfield Phillips and William John "Jake" Spotswood. He had siblings Robert James Phillips, Dorothea "Dorothy" Violet Phillips, Carol Queenie Phillips, Shirley Phillips, William Phillips, Henry Hamilton Phillips, William Clifford Phillips, and Glenn Iza Phillips. He married Adelaide Victoria (English) Phillips in 1917, and had children Kenneth Hugh Phillips and Lyall James Phillips. Hugh Phillips died at age 92 years old on December 20, 1979 in Horsham.

In 1886, in the year that Hugh Spotswood Phillips was born, on February 14th, the first train left Los Angeles for the East -by the way of the transcontinental railroad - with a cargo of oranges. In 1895, at the age of only 9 years old, Hugh was alive when on March 15th, in County Tipperary, Ireland, Michael Cleary killed his wife of 8 years, Bridget, and burned her body. His defense was that his "wife" was a changeling that was left in his real wife's place when she was abducted by fairies. He was nonetheless convicted and imprisoned for manslaughter. He spent 15 years in prison.
