Howat Carrington McLean was born in 1903 to Alexander Thomas McLean and Mary Louisa (Gill) McLean, and had siblings Alick Macdonnell Stringer McLean, Kenneth Arthur McLean, Carden Patrick McLean, Beryl McLean, Enid McLean, Arthur McLean, and Lachlan Gill McLean. Howat McLean married Joan Watson (Rowe) McLean, and died at age 63 years old in 1966.

In 1903, in the year that Howat Carrington McLean was born, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company was begun by two childhood friends, William Harley and Arthur Davidson - with help from Arthur's brother, Walter. Their first prototype - a "motor-bicycle" - couldn't climb hills without also pedaling, so they went back to the drawing board, and in 1904 their new version came in 4th in a race. Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company were the only two major motorcycle companies to survive the Great Depression.

In 1915, he was merely 12 years old when in May, the RMS Lusitania was sunk by a German torpedo. The Lusitania was a British passenger ship that was sailing from New York to Liverpool England. She sank in 18 minutes - 1,198 died and 761 survived. While travelers were the main casualty - and commodity - the Lusitania did carry wartime weapons. "Remember the Lusitania" became the rallying cry of World War 1.
