Horatio was just 5' 6" tall with an expanded chest measurement of 35". As a time served electrical engineer and a member of the Glasgow Royal Engineers Territorial Force Horatio signed up in Tillicoutry on 12th January 1915 at the age of 20 years and 3 months. He was paid an extra 1/- due to being a proficient electrician. He entered the theatre of WW1 on the 29th of May 1915 when he was deployed to France. The Cable Section were involved in maintaining communications in the Arras area and we know that Horatio was at Boulecourt. He was killed in action on 1st September 1917 after serving 2 years and 233 days of active service in France. Horatio's parents, Joseph and Jeanie Strickland, chose the epitaph "To memory dear" to be written at the foot of his headstone. The headstone itself was supplied and is maintained by the CWGC Horatio was reported as being killed in action in the Kirkintilloch Gazette (Lenzie and Campsie Reporter) Friday September 14th 1917. "Sapper Horatio Strickland son of Mr Joseph Strickland, Torrance has been killed in France. He was in the Royal Engineers." Kirkintilloch Gazette (Lenzie and Campsie Reporter) Friday February 1st 1918 "It is reported that the late Sapper H.S. Strickland R.E., son of Mr J. Strickland, Torrance, was honourably commended to the notice of the Corps Commander for gallant conduct in connection with operations near Boullecourt." His personal effects were dispatched to his father on 14th February 1918 and his father acknowledged the receipt of his son's 1914-15 Star on 29th September 1920. A memorial service was held in Campsie Parish Church, Lennoxtown in remembrance of the 27 parishioners killed in action over the previous year. Those brave lads commemorated in their service that they showed in their short life a glorious promise of future broad careers. These soldiers always felt his own life small and poor in comparison with others, which should not be. Their life was short but measured by what they put into it, their life was perhaps very long. “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, for they rest from their labours and their works do follow them.” Reported in The Herald 3rd July 1918.
