  • Introduction

    Horatio N. Marsden was listed in the 1850 census in St. Louis, Missouri, with his mother and his sister. The census says he was born in Missouri about 1838. He enlisted in the Union army in August 1862 and served in the Tenth Missouri Cavalry and Merrill's Horse Cavalry. The roster of the latter says he was from Danville, Missouri. While based in Corinth, Mississippi, he took part in a Union raid into Alabama in 1863 and was mustered out at Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1865. Letters written by and to Horatio N. Marsden during the Civil War have been published in a book called "Bushwhackers and Broken Hearts" (Infinity, 2010). On 19 September 1881 he married Agnes Graham at the 3rd Baptist church in St. Louis, Mo. They had a daughter, Alice May Marsden, born 7 December 1885. They later lived in Illinois. He died in Brownstown, Fayette County, Illinois, on 8 October 1894.

Horatio N. Marsden was known by the nickname "TIP". We know this from letters during the Civil War. The origin of this nickname is unknown. During the Civil War he corresponded with Louisa Sanders of Montgomery County, Missouri. See her letters in a book called "Bushwhackers and Broken Hearts," published by Infinity in 2010.
