    Horace was White. PARENTS: His parents, Lee Roy and Ama Zona "Zonie" (Weems) O'Rear were both born in Texas. GRANDPARENTS: Lee Roy O'Rear's father James Addison O'Rear (Horace's paternal grandfather) was born in Alabama in December 1844 and was living in Russell County, Alabama on 10 January 1850 (census date) at age 5. Lee Roy's mother Adryann "Addie" Sophrony Fletcher Cook (Horace's paternal grandmother) was born in Troupville, Lowndes County, Georgia on 22 May 1844 and was living in Russell County, Alabama on 8 October 1850 (census date) at age 6. Zonie Weems' father Jesse Weams (Horace's maternal grandfather) was born in Arkansas in 1861. Not much is known about him. Zonie's mother Frances Corley (Horace's maternal grandmother) was born in Texas in January 1866. GREAT-GRANDPARENTS: James Addison O'Rear's father Josiah O'Rear (Horace's great-grandfather) was born in White Plains, Greene County, Georgia in 1806. James' mother Lucinda R. Lewis (Horace's great-grandmother) was born in White Plains, Greene County, Georgia on 15 November 1807. Addie Cook's father Wesley Cook (Horace's great-grandfather) was born in Georgia on 23 January 1803. Addie's mother Mary S. Brooks (Horace's great-grandmother) was born in Georgia on 16 April 1808. Frances Corley's parents William and Fannie Corley (Horace's great-grandparents) were both born in Texas. Not much else is known about either of them.

    Horace graduated from Atlanta High School in Atlanta, Cass County, Texas on 22 May 1925. Commencement exercises were held at 8:00 PM at First Methodist Church. Horace was one of 28 students in the Atlanta High School Class of 1925.

    Horace was a minister for the Churches of Christ.
  • Professional Career

    Horace was a farmer in Atlanta, Cass County, Texas from the time he was a teenager. He also did some carpentry work in Atlanta, working for his father's (Lee Roy O'Rear) first cousin Alfred Meritt "Met" Steger. In September 1932, Horace moved his young family to New London, Rusk County, Texas to work in the oil field. He worked for Humble Oil and Refining Company for 33 years, retiring in 1965 while living in Crowley, Acadia Parish, Louisiana. Some of the places he lived while working for Humble were: New London, Rusk County, Texas (1932 to 1939); Kingsville, Kleberg County, Texas (1939 to 1940); Victoria, Victoria County, Texas (June to August 1940); Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas (1940 to 1941); back to Kingsville (1941 to 1944); Falfurrias, Brooks County, Texas (1944 to 1954); and then Crowley, Louisiana from 1954 until he retired from Humble in 1965. Horace also preached for congregations of the Churches of Christ in Falfurrias, Texas and Crowley, Louisiana. After retiring from Humble, he served as full-time minister for the Church of Christ located at the corner of Eastern Avenue and Northern Avenue in Crowley until his death in 1968.

    The following appeared in the Crowley Post-Signal newspaper (Crowley, Louisiana) on Thursday, October 31, 1968, page 1: "Death Claims Horace O'Rear. CROWLEY, La. -- Rev. Horace O'Rear, 62, Church of Christ minister in Crowley for the past 13 years, died suddenly today at 12:05 a.m. in the American Legion Hospital here. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in the Geesey Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel in Crowley. Following the services here, Rev. O'Rear's body will be transferred to the Hanner Funeral Home in Atlanta, Texas where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in the Law's Chapel Cemetery. Rev. O'Rear was a field superintendent for Humble Oil and Refinery Company for 34 years before retiring in 1966. He had served as a minister of the Church of Christ in Crowley since 1956. In lieu of floral offerings, the family of Rev. O'Rear has requested that contributions be made to a memorial fund at the Church of Christ at Northern and Eastern. Survivors include his wife, Grace Collins O'Rear of Crowley; two sons, Larry O'Rear of Alice, Texas, and Garland O'Rear of Baytown, Texas; a brother, Willard O'Rear of Atlanta, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Nat Curtright of Atlanta, Texas and Mrs. Truman Emberg of Dillingham, Alaska; and four grandchildren."
