He had siblings Irwin Clarence Ohmie, Harry Edward Ohmie Sr, Robert John Ohmie, Raymond Leroy Ohmie, Floyd Eugene Ohmie, Mildred (Ohmie) Corbett, and Lillie Irene (Ohmie) Adams. He was in a relationship with Catherine Therese (Kleinsorge) Ohmie, and had children Dennis R Ohmie, Judy Kay Ohmie, Virgil John Ohmie, Larry Ohmie, Dewayne Ohmie, Julie Ohmie, and Joella Ohmie. Herman Ohmie died at age 84 years old on March 28, 1997 in Shoreline, King County, WA, and was buried on April 2, 1997 at Holyrood Cathlic Cemetery in Shoreline.

Previously the Governor of New Jersey and President of Princeton University, he was the first Southerner to serve as President since Zachary Taylor, over 60 years previous.
