    THE Friends of the late Mr. HENRY STOOKE, J.P., are invited to follow his remains to the place of interment, the Melbourne General Cemetery. The funeral procession is appointed to move from his late residence, Carlisle street west, St. Kilda, on Thursday, the 25th inst., at 2 o'clock, passing over Prince's-bridge about a quarter to 3 o'clock.STOOKE.—On the 22nd August, at his residence, Carlisle-street, St. Kilda, of apoplexy, Mr. Henry Stooke, J.P., aged forty-eight years. - The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957) Tue 23 Aug 1870 Page 8.

In 1822, in the year that Henry Stooke was born, on July 3rd, Charles Babbage published a proposal for a forerunner of the modern computer. Called a "difference engine", it calculated logarithms and trigonometric functions. Babbage wanted to eliminate the errors that occurred through the use of human "calculators" by creating a machine to do the same work. While a prototype was begun, it was never completed.
