    Henry Simon Royce, 92, of Stowe died Friday, Jan. 28, 2011. He was born in South Duxbury Sept. 20, 1918, son of Daniel and Royce, grew up in Vermont and Florida, and attended schools near Camel’s Hump in Duxbury. At age 21, Henry married Verniece Ellen LaPan on Oct. 1, 1939, in Graniteville, Vt. advertisement He finished welding school in Burlington in 1942, and worked as a plumber and welder in Vermont and Maine before entering the U.S. Army. He was a member of the 477th Field Artillery Observation Battalion, stationed in Fort Knox in Kentucky from November 1944 to January 1946. He also served in Hawaii, at Pearl Harbor. He moved to Groton, Conn., in 1952 to work as a welder on the first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, at Electric Boat, a division of General Dynamics. Henry was instrumental in designing special nuclear welding techniques. Henry was active in the New London Motorcycle Club, and won two New England high-point overall trophies in Enduro racing. In later years, he was a member of the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers and rode snow machines all over Vermont with the Green Mountain Roamers. From 1968 to 1975, he and his wife operated Royce Travel Trailers in Groton, Conn. He returned to Electric Boat as a welding instructor, and in 1981 he and Verniece retired to Vermont, built a home, and then toured the country in their recreational vehicle. Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Verniece Royce of Stowe; their children, Alice Pelletier of Groton, Conn., Lyle and Lynda Royce of Decker, Ind., Terry and Brenda Royce of Sebastian, Fla., Lindsey and Morgan Royce of Morrisville, and Paul and Sonya Royce of Swanton; a daughter-in-law, Rita Royce of Stowe; one sister Nettie Miles of Vermont; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. A daughter, Patricia Royce, a son, Wayne Royce, and a son-in-law, Richard Pelletier, died earlier, as did his siblings Elsworth Royce, Mae Blodgett and Myrtle Anthony. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, Feb. 2, at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waterbury, followed by a reception at the Waterbury American Legion.
