He married Bridget McCullagh, and had children Mary McBride, James Joseph McAleer, John McAleer, Henry Edward McAleer, and Michael McAleer. Henry Mcaleer died at age 84 years old on September 20, 1911.

In 1827, in the year that Henry McAleer Sr was born, on February 28th, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad - the B&O - was incorporated. The B&O became the first railroad to carry both people and freight and was Maryland's answer to the Erie Canal. Construction began on July 4th, 1828.

In 1838, when he was just 11 years old, on January 11th in New Jersey, Samuel Morse and two others first publicly demonstrated Morse's new invention - the telegraph. Patented by Morse in 1837, the electrical telegraph used a code developed by him and his assistant, Samuel Vail, and sent a message two miles. In 1844, Morse broadcast from Washington DC to Baltimore Maryland the message "What hath God wrought" and the telegraph took off.
