Henry James Duke of Bdale Australia was born in 1880 to John James Duke and Mary Ann (Obrien) Duke. He had siblings Alice Elizabeth Duke, Richard Duke, Rose Ellen Duke, Lawrence Bernard Duke, Francis Joseph Duke, John Duke, William Duke, Robert Kelly Duke, Maurice Paul Duke, James Duke, Alfred Duke, and Charles Jerrad Duke. He married Florence May Duke, and had children Joseph Henry Duke and Eileen Margaret (Duke) Macgillicuddy. Henry Duke died at age 54 years old in 1934 in Bdale.

In 1880, in the year that Henry James Duke was born, in October, the "Blizzard of 1880" began in North America - considered the most severe winter ever known in the US. Many areas were snowbound throughout the whole winter, which was made famous in Laura Ingalls Wilder's book The Long Winter.

In 1892, Henry was only 12 years old when on October 5th, the Dalton Gang was shot. The Gang was attempting to rob two banks - simultaneously - in Coffeyville Kansas but word spread of the robberies and townspeople with guns greeted them when they left the banks. Four members of the gang were killed - only Emmett Dalton survived his wounds and spent 14 years in prison.
