Hendricus Spierings 1811 - 1893

Hendricus Spierings was born on June 15, 1811 in Dieden, Demen en Langel, Noord Braban Netherlands to Johannes Spierings and Engelina (VanTongeren) Spierings. He married Jacoba (Megens) Spierings on May 9, 1842 in Megen, Noord Brabant, and they were married until Jacoba's death on November 13, 1886. He had a child Henry Spierings. Hendricus Spierings died at age 81 years old on January 23, 1893 in Oss, Noord Brabant.

In 1811, in the year that Hendricus Spierings was born, on July 9th, British explorer, surveyor, and fur trader David Thompson posted a notice at the junction of the Columbia River and the Snake River - in modern-day Washington- claiming the area for the United Kingdom and stating the intention of the North West Company to build a trading post there. The trading post was built several years later.

In 1835, he was 24 years old when on January 30th, the first known attempt to kill a sitting President of the United States occurred just outside the United States Capitol Building. President Andrew Jackson was leaving the building after the funeral of South Carolina Representative Warren R. Davis. An Englishman, Richard Lawrence - who was unemployed and possibly mentally ill - stepped out and attempted to shoot. His gun misfired so he pulled out another gun - which also misfired. He was immediately caught.
