Helier Harbutt was born on May 5, 1875 at Jersey in United Kingdom to Thomas Jefcoate Harbutt and Annabelle (Jennings) Harbutt, and had siblings Percy Hawea Harbutt, Sydney Jefcoate Harbutt, Wilfred Harbutt, Ella (Harbutt) Allen, Vida Sims, Ethelwyn Winstone, Bruce Harbutt, and Grace Annabelle (Harbutt) Winstone. He was in a relationship with Eva (Wood) Harbutt, and had children Phillip Jennings Harbutt, Warwick Leigh Harbutt, Winsome Kathleen (Harbutt) Hoskins, Lloyd Gray Harbutt, Eva Joan (Harbutt) Wilkinson, and Elizabeth Patricia (Harbutt) Thomas. Helier Harbutt died at age 72 years old on July 29, 1947 in Orange, NSW Australia, and was buried at Northern Suburbs Memorial Gardens and Crematorium 199 Delhi Rd, in North Ryde, City of Ryde County.

In 1902, when he was 27 years old, the first Rose Bowl game was played in Pasadena, California. Called the "Tournament East–West football game" at the time, the Michigan Wolverines (East) played the Stanford Indians (West) - the Wolverines won 49 - 0. (The Stanford captain requested an end to the game with 8 minutes remaining.) The Tournament of Roses Parade began in 1890 and the football game began as a way to boost tourism in the area.
