Helen 'Ellen' Simpson Doig was the daughter of James Doig Sr. and Agnes 'Annie' Henderson. Helen had 11 siblings and the family resided in the area of Fife, Scotland. Helen's parents and several siblings are buried in St. Columbus Churchyard, Burntisland where there is a monument that states: In Memory of James Doig D. 13.5.1859 Aged 85y. Annie Henderson His Wife D. 26.1.1861 Aged 80y and David Their Son D. 9.11.1858 Aged 60y. Also Alexander D. 23.1.1855 Aged 49y and John D. The couple relocated to Maitland Street, Newhaven, North Leith where Andrew owned a grocery store and was a 'spirit' dealer. By 1851 the couple had children Andrewina, Helen, Mary Ann, Jane and Robert. The building industry was booming in Australia, and by April 1855 the family was emigrating first to Victoria, Australia and then on to Hobart, Tasmania where Andrew was employed as a 'joiner'. Several of Helen's Doig siblings also moved to Australia, staying there and never returning to Scotland. Their daughter Jemima Grant Morison was born in Tasmania in April of 1858. In 1866, their only son Robert drowned while swimming in a river in Lauceston, Tasmania. He was 15 years old. Helen's eldest daughter, Andrewina, married Henry Heald in 1867 Launceston, Tasmania, and remained there, having 9 children, 8 of which survived to adulthood. Interestingly enough, the descendants of Andrewina and the descendants of her sister Mary Ann Morison did not know about each other, until meeting in 2002 through the AncientFaces website. By 1869 the Morison family was back in Scotland, living at 22 St. John Street, Edinburgh, and Andrew was noted as 'wine and spirit merchant'. Andrew's brother, John Morison, Jr. had followed in the footsteps of their father, John Morison Sr., who had owned a 'Wine and Spirit' shop in Edinburgh. John Jr. was a brewer and employed 18 men....Andrew was working in the family business. Helen lost her husband, Andrew, on December 4th, of 1871 to pneumonia, and he was buried in the Edinburgh and Leith Cemetery, Edinburgh. In 1872, two of Helen's daughters married: Mary Ann Morison married Francis Steeples, and immigrated to America Helen Simpson Doig Morison married Robert Wilson Robertson, and moved to Musselburgh, Scotland. When her daughter Helen Morison Robertson passed away in 1878, mother Helen moved in with her son-in-law Robert to care for her two young granddaughters that were left motherless. Helen remained in the Robertson household until August of 1881, when she and daughter Jemima immigrated to Kansas to live with daughter Mary Ann Morison Steeples, after the death of Mary Ann's husband, Francis Steeples. Helen remained with her daughter Mary Ann until Helen's death in 1897. Helen was born in Scotland, ventured to Australia, then back to Scotland...and spent the last 17 years of her life in Kansas. She has descendants in Tasmania, Australia, Scotland and the U.S.
