Hazel Melvina Upton of Canberra, ACT Australia was born in 1909 at Charles Street, in Footscray, VIC. She was married to Roy Frederick Mountain, and had children Joan (Mountain) Hawker, Donald Mountain, Geoffrey Alfred Mountain, and Dianne Robyn Mountain. Hazel Upton died at age 92 years old on June 18, 2002 at Eabrai Lodge in Weston, ACT, and was buried on June 21, 2002 at Norwood Park Crematorium Sandford St, in Mitchell.

In 1909, in the year that Hazel Melvina Upton was born, the New York Times published the first movie review. It was a report on D.W. Griffith's movie "Pippa Passes" also called "The Song of Conscience", a silent film. The review said that this work was moving away from "lurid material that attracted the wrath of censors and concerned citizens and toward more respectable ends. The movie was the story of a young female factory worker, on her day off, wandering and singing - thus changing the hearts of those around her towards good.

In 1914, when she was only 5 years old, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. Anna Jarvis had championed a Mother's Day for years but Congress had joked a few years earlier that then they would have to proclaim a "Mother-in-law's Day" as well. The President who championed a woman's right to vote also created a day in their honor.
