  • Introduction

    Hazel was born Hazel Leona Brokenshire, in Cornwall, England to William J Brokenshire, and Eva A Brokenshire. She came to the US when she was around 5 years old. Hazel was spunky, full of life, and a social butterfly. She also loved snuggling with her grand babies and great-grand babies. While she never published anything, she loved to write short stories. Sometimes leaving early, because she had so many thoughts in her head she needed to get down. Her first marriage was to Alexander Davidson Robertson, together they had Donald Lee Robertson and William "Bill" Alexander Robertson. After they divorced Hazel married Nicholas Hotra, and together they had one daughter named Kathleen Eva Hotra. Donald went on to marry Barbara "Bobbie" Boucher (Robertson). They had five children together, Christine, Peter, Rebecca "Becky", Janet, and Daniel. Kathleen went on to have three daughters, Alicia, Sara, and Amanda. Sadly, Kathleen and Amanda had untimely deaths. Bill never had children, but he made sure to spoil his brothers grandchildren. Hazel passed away in February of 1991, and only met three of her nine great-grandchildren. If she was alive today she would have 9 great - great grandchildren (that number isn't quite done growing quite yet)to love and snuggle on, just like she always did with her grandkids and great-grandchildren.

In 1914, in the year that Hazel L Hotra was born, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. Anna Jarvis had championed a Mother's Day for years but Congress had joked a few years earlier that then they would have to proclaim a "Mother-in-law's Day" as well. The President who championed a woman's right to vote also created a day in their honor.

In 1941, when she was 27 years old, on June 25th, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802, prohibiting racial discrimination in the defense industry. EO 8802 was the first federal action to prohibit employment discrimination - without prejudice as to "race, creed, color, or national origin" - in the U.S. Civil Rights groups had planned a march on Washington D.C. to protest for equal rights but with the signing of the Order, they canceled the March.
