  • Introduction

    Harriet Quimby was an American pioneering aviator and the first female in the United States to earn her pilot's license (1911) and later went on the be the first female to fly across the English Channel in 1912. She was also a journalist and screenwriter who wrote seven screenplays. She died at the early age of 37 why flying in the 3rd annual Boston Aviation Meet.

    Quimby was an American born in Arcadia Township, Manistee County Michigan in 1875. In 1888, Quimby and her family moved to Arroyo Grande, California and then moved again to San Francisco, California in the early 1900s where she began a career in journalism. As an adult, she then moved to New York City (Manhattan) in 1903 to work as a theatre critic.

    She attended the Moisant Aviation School in Long Island New York. After only taking 33 lessons over the course of four months she received her pilots license!
  • Personal Life & Family

    Quimby never married or had children. She was known to be independent, drove her own car (which seems like nothing after being the first female pilot) and was able to support herself and her parents. It was also said she was known as "New York's Sweetheart" and "America's first lady of the air".

    She died in a plane accident during a Boston air show where the plane she was in took a nose dive (and since planes at that time didnt have seatbealts) and was ejected from the plane and crashed into the water and did not survive.
